PESCO Reference Number: Where to Find the 14-Digit Code
Everything you do with your PESCO bill online starts with the reference number. It is the key the PITC portal uses to find your connection, and if you enter it correctly your bill appears every time. Most failed lookups are not portal faults at all; they happen when someone types the customer ID or the meter number by mistake. Here is how to identify the right code and use it.
Where to find it on the bill
Check the header of the printed bill, above the name and address. The reference number is the long field of digits only, usually the first entry on the row, marked Reference No or Ref No. It is the single 14-digit number on the page. Save it once, in your phone or a note, and you will never have to search for it again, because it does not change between months.
What the 14 digits represent
The reference number is a routing code. Its opening digits correspond to your PESCO sub-division and feeder, and the remaining digits pin down your individual connection. You do not need to interpret any of it. The portal simply wants the 14 raw digits, entered together with no spaces, dashes or letters.
How it differs from the other numbers
A PESCO bill prints several identifiers side by side. Only the reference number works for online lookups:
| Identifier | Typical length | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Reference number | 14 digits | Viewing and paying the bill online |
| Customer ID / Account ID | Around 10 digits | Identifying you in PESCO records |
| Meter number | Varies, shown on the meter | Linking the physical meter to the account |
| CNIC | 13 digits | Applying for or transferring a connection, not bill lookup |
Old and new reference numbers
People often search for their "old" or "new" PESCO reference number, and the reason is simple: while the number usually stays fixed for the life of a connection, PESCO issues a new one when the account is materially changed, for example when a connection is regularised, the tariff category is switched, or a name or load change is processed. The old number then stops returning a bill online. If a number that used to work now shows nothing, do not assume the portal is broken; find the current number on your latest paper bill.
Paying with your reference number
The reference number does double duty: it opens the bill and it is also the number you enter to pay. In a bank app or a mobile wallet, choose the electricity or utility option, select PESCO, and type the 14 digits to bring up the amount due. Since the number does not change, saving it once as a biller lets you pay every future bill without entering it again. It also means anyone can settle the bill for you, a relative or a local shop, using only the 14 digits, with no need for your CNIC or bank details. That convenience is a good reason to store the number somewhere safe rather than relying on the paper bill.
Recovering the number without a recent bill
If you cannot find any recent bill, the same reference number appears on every older PESCO bill for that connection and on the original demand notice. The landlord or a previous occupant may hold a copy. Because the portal has no CNIC or name search, the number cannot be looked up online; the last resort is your PESCO sub-divisional office, which can trace it from the meter number and your CNIC.
With the number confirmed, follow our online bill check guide, or if you only need a copy to pay, see the PESCO duplicate bill. You can also check the number is the right length in our bill checker first.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a PESCO reference number?
It is exactly 14 digits, numbers only. If your code is about 10 digits it is the customer ID, and a code printed on the meter body is the meter number. Neither works on the online portal.
My PESCO reference number stopped working. Why?
The most likely reason is that PESCO issued a new reference number after a change to your account, such as regularisation, a tariff change or a name change. The old number is retired. Check your most recent paper bill for the current number.
Can I get my PESCO reference number using my CNIC?
No. The portal does not search by CNIC or name. Recover the number from an older bill, the demand notice, or by visiting your PESCO sub-divisional office with your meter details and CNIC.
Is the reference number the same as the bill number?
No. The reference number identifies the connection and stays the same every month. The bill number is unique to a single month's bill and changes each cycle. Use the reference number for online checks.
